Health Insurance
Information on Insurance for International Students
All international students must be enrolled in the National Health Insurance Program. This insurance is designed to safeguard international students from unexpected accidents or high medical expenses.
Please note that it is mandatory for all international students staying in Korea to register for health insurance with the National Health Insurance of Korea from March 1, 2021.
International students will be automatically enrolled in the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) upon completion of their residence card(Alien Registration Card).
International Office will give more details about the NHIS once you arrive.
○ Since the National Health Insurance is applied only 'after the date of completion of alien registration', it is not subscribed to National Health Insurance until your alien registration is completed. It will take around 6 to 8 weeks to receive the Residence Card. All international students are automatically enrolled in the Korean National Health Insurance Program after the date of completion of alien registration. This means that the subscription to National Health Insurance will be processed in 2 months, and they will not be covered by insurance during this period. That is why all international students have to subscribe in advance to personal insurance valid for 2 to 3 months from the moment of arrival to Korea.
During this time, students will need to come prepared with separate health or travel insurance that will help cover any health/travel-related costs or risks that may occur. Students will be responsible for addressing their personal health or travel needs before NHIS enrollment.

○ Insurance Benefit
International students can receive the same level of benefit as regular Korean citizens in Korea. The insurance service covers up to 80% of inpatient treatments and medical services. The service also covers 30 – 70% of outpatient treatments and medical services. In general, the covered amount gets deducted from your medical bill when you check out of the medical institution. For more information, visit the NHIS website.
